Could you solve the case – not just as seen on TV, but in virtual reality?

We invite you to take part in our study looking at eyewitness identification using virtual reality (VR) to better understand how memory works when it matters most.

The experiment investigates cognition, memory and perception using VR technology, specifically a head-mounted virtual reality display (VR-HMD).

If you choose to sign up, you we will ask you to complete this experiment in 2 parts.

Part 1: Online (about 60-90 minutes)

  1. A sequence of seven standardised cognitive tasks, primarily assessing different components of face processing and memory – These are separated into two sessions for ease.
  1. A simple survey asking you to fill out basic demographic information about yourself (such as age, gender, etc).

Part 2: In person at the University of Stirling (about 45 minutes)

  1. Three basic vision tests (colour vision, visual acuity, 3D vision)

The virtual reality session, which includes videos depicting non-violent simulated criminal events. You will be asked to answer questions about what you have witnessed.

You must be over the age of 18 and have normal to corrected to normal vision, intact depth perception, colour vision, and visual activity.
In addition, participants must not have any self-reported history of significant motion sickness, active nausea/vomiting, epilepsy or psychosis as VR may exaggerate these conditions.

You will receive an Amazon voucher worth £22.50 as reimbursement for your time after completing the experiment.

Please feel free to read the information sheet to learn more about the study:

Read the QR code with your phone or click on the link to book your timeslot for the in-person part. In the confirmation email you will receive the links for the online study parts. Please book your online slot in a manner that allows you to complete both online study parts before you arrive to the university! We kindly ask you to fill out the online parts on a laptop or PC as it will not work on a mobile device.

If you require a timeslot after 5pm, we offer these on Wednesdays and Thursdays, to book these please get in touch directly with Zsuzsa Lugosi-Grant at zsuzsa.lugosi-grant@stir.ac.uk.

We hope to see YOU there!
